R.V.Teachers College
Estblished In : 1954

The first ever initiative to start a college to train teachers was started by late .M.C.Sivananda Sarma in 1954. The R.V. Teacher’s college was the first institution in Bangalore which started the D.Ed and B.Ed programmes.

A glimpse through the records of the past, one gets to see how the institution has crossed many a milestones. Having been recognized as the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE) in 1996, by the Ministry of HRD, the College has extended its activities to many other areas.

The college has established a Research Cell which organized in-service programmers and conducts Research by some of the faculty members. Some of them include “Method to develop instructional materials for dyslexic children in English”, “to improve communication abilities of Kannada medium students”, etc.

The activities under IASE also include conducting workshops, orientation and development programs, preparing lab manuals, diagnostic test materials and others in collaboration with UNESCO-HIV program. With a tie-up with KSOU, the faculty members have guided 25 students to work their M.Phil dissertations in 2001.

The manuals on Number systems, English Poetry, etc makes teaching simpler and can be easily understood by students. These are brought out by the institution with the assistance from DESRT. ‘Kalpana is the college annual which has articles, poems, pictures contributed by both the staff and students.

The college though one of the earliest institutions founded by Sri.M.C.Sivnanda Sarma, has maintained its glory. With recent additions of air conditioned Seminar Hall, a Research Center, a library with a number of books, it appears that the effort of the founder secretary is remarkable even to this day.

The R.V. Teacher’s Training institute which was founded along with the R.V. Teacher’s College in 1954 in the Precincts of the present RSS Trust office is presently situated at a well-ventilated new building at 4th Block, Jayanagar which also houses the R.V. Nursing Hostel.

Although, a part of the R.V. Teacher’s College, the TCH section was separated from R.V. Teacher’s College in 1978 and in 2003-2004, the title of the course was changed from TCH to D.Ed (Diploma in Education).

The R.V. Teacher’s Training institute is a premier institution for offering a D.Ed programme and the first to be given a permanent recognition by the Govt of Karnataka in 1975. In 1996, the NCTE (National Council for teacher Education) endorsed the institution for its work.

The D.Ed course offered in the institute is creative mix of theory with activities. An ample time is spent by trainees on co-curricular activities like health & physical education, value based education, music, art and a yearly workshop based on model making.
In fact, a peep into the room where models used as ‘teaching-aids’, is really awe-inspiring. Working models with attractive lights for match-the –following, the Gol Gumbaz, other historical monuments, and other such models have been stored in a room.

In fact, the RVEC is presently busy with a number of on-going programs. Some of them include Collaborative Action Research on Teacher Resource Centres: Anchored and led by TISS, Mumbai and a Science to cater to teachers and students of underprivileged schools in collaboration with VSEI, India.

The RVEC is indeed, a center for improving the quality of education at the school level, which is of utmost importance in the present day scenario. Schools, of course lay the foundation for future education.
